There are several changes happening in the Maritime industry within the next few years, including a cyber security clause and sulphur cap. So, what does this mean for the Maritime industry?
Cyber Security Clause
Once published, the aim of the clause is to raise awareness of cyber risks among owners, brokers and charterers. It is also designed to be used in contracts to ensure parties implement procedures and systems that will minimise the risk of a cyber attack, as well as reduce the impact of an incident by responding quickly and efficiently.
The cyber security clause is expected to be published in Spring 2019.
IMO’s 2020 Global Sulphur Cap
IMO’s new global limit will ensure fuel oil used onboard ships has no more than 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) sulphur; the current limit is set at 3.5% m/m and has been in effect since 1st January 2012.
Due to the new sulphur cap, ships will be required to use low-sulphur compliant fuel oil. There will be new controls that will take place once the sulphur cap comes into effect, such as, the requirement for ships to obtain a bunker delivery note for any fuel oil taken for use onboard. The delivery note must state the sulphur content of the fuel oil and samples can be requested to evidence the percentage. A ship’s Flag State must also issue an International Air Pollution (IAPP) Certificate.
World Maritime Day
This year the theme is “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality, as well as highlight how important women’s contribution is to the Maritime industry.
