Under the European Union’s ‘Fit for 55’ programme, all major EU ports are mandated to provide shoreside electricity by 2030. This initiative allows cruise ships to plug into the local power grid while docked, significantly reducing emissions from idling engines. Ports like Rotterdam are already setting the pace, having launched their first shore power facilities for cruise vessels. By tapping into local renewable energy, ships can minimise their carbon footprint during port stays, benefiting both local communities and the global environment.

Shipbuilding and refurbishment efficiency

Energy efficiency extends beyond fuels to ship design and operational enhancements. Shipbuilders are increasingly adopting advanced hull designs aimed at optimising hydrodynamic performance. Companies like Carnival have invested heavily in hull technologies and maintenance practices that reduce drag, thereby improving fuel efficiency. Innovative propulsion systems and eco-friendly materials are further propelling ships toward a greener standard.

Ship refurbishment also plays a critical role. Retrofitting existing vessels with energy-saving technologies and waste management systems extends their lifecycle and aligns older ships with modern environmental standards.
